Four-cylinder enginesThis Part of the Head is devoted to the repair of the 2.3 l 4-cylinder petrol engine equipped with system of injection of fuel which is not connected with extraction from the car (in situ). All procedures demanding dismantle of the power unit are given in Part the General and capital repairs of the engine of the present Chapter.
Two versions of engines of 2.3 l are applied to a complete set of the considered Honda Accord models. The engine of the F23A5 series represents the basic version whereas the F23A1 and F23A4 series represent actually the same design equipped with one of two variations of the device of correction of phases of gas distribution (VTEC) (see the Section Removal, check of a state and installation of assembly of yokes).
Descriptions of the most part of the considered procedures are made on the basis of the assumption that the power unit remains on the regular place in a motive compartment of the car. In view of told in case the engine is already dismantled and installed on a workbench or the assembly stand, many of the described steps have to be lowered.
All considered 4-cylinder engines are equipped with one camshaft having the top arrangement (SOHC) and operating functioning of 16 valves (on 4 on each of cylinders). The engine has a compact design which main component are the block and a head of cylinders made of an easy aluminum alloy. Two balancing shaft which main appointment is decrease in level of the vibrations resulting from the jet forces applied to pistons and a cranked shaft enter a design of the unit.
The cranked shaft is put in radical bearings which covers are attracted to the block by means of the general bridge. The fourth radical bearing is persistent and in addition controls an axial side play of a shaft.
Pistons are equipped two compression and one oil scraper with rings. The piston fingers having semi-floating landing are pressed in the top heads of rods. In the lower heads replaceable inserts of shatunny bearings are located.
The engine has liquid cooling on the basis of the centrifugal rotor pump put in action from a gear belt. Cooling liquid circulates on internal galleries of the engine, washing cylinders and combustion chambers, and also is banished on the channels equipped in the inlet pipeline.
Supply of greasing to internal components of the engine is carried out by the gear oil pump located in forward part of the engine under a cover of a gas-distributing belt. The drive of an internal gear wheel of the pump is carried out directly from a cranked shaft. Oil is sucked in via the mesh filter of type from the case pallet, then banished via the full-line filter of cartridge type installed on the party of the power unit turned to a back partition of a motive compartment.
